Transport Smart Classes show key buyer side stakeholders how they can deploy the latest digital technology-enabled solutions and best practices to tackle their transport sector challenges (e.g. around congestion, traffic flows, air pollution and emissions, noise, first and last mile mobility, customer experience, cost effectiveness, connecting transport networks, managing and maintaining assets & infrastructure) and deliver a transport system that will allow passengers and citizens to travel efficiently, safely and with minimal impact on the environment.

Delegates include commissioning, procurement, trialling, partnering and policy leads, senior influencers, strategic decision makers and planners from progressive city, borough, district and county councils; public and private transport operators/service providers; sub-regional transport bodies, combined authorities, integrated transport authorities and passenger transport executives; DfT and supporting national transport agencies; prime contractors etc.

Core themes range from on-demand transport and MaaS applications, predictive traffic management, smart parking and enforcing CAZs and LEZs, to analysing people movements, new ways of visualising data, connected and autonomous vehicles, intelligent street lighting, real-time transport modelling, and smart ticketing and fare collection.

On December 5th we will be casting a spotlight over South West England and Wales, hosting our speakers discussions on how the latest digital innovations can help overcome the transport and mobility challenges faced by burgeoning city-regions such as Bristol, Cardiff, Bournemouth/Poole, Exeter, Swansea Bay, Swindon, Plymouth and Torbay, and beyond. Delegates will hear from industry movers, shapers and disruptors during initial rapid-fire thought leadership presentations, before moving on to in-depth consultations with experts and peers during the roundtable discussions. In addition, this Smart Class will feature up to 3 keynote presentations from ITAs, PTEs, major transport operators, agencies or local/combined authorities giving real world insight into their collaborative initiatives and digital journeys to date. This half day in-person event is free to attend for bona fide delegates satisfying our registration criteria.

“Open Passenger Data and Smart City Mobility” – Bristol has a rich cultural heritage, prosperous economy, and world class universities, Bristol is consistently ranked as one of the best places to live in the UK. Sustained investment has resulted in large increases in sustainable travel across the city. Public transport use in Bristol has witnessed a rapid increase in recent years compared to decreases in the rest of the country, and more people now cycle to work in Bristol than in Sheffield, Nottingham, Newcastle and Liverpool added together. “How to Effectively Manage and Enforce Clean Air and Low Emission Zones with Virtual Permits and Digital ANPR” – A recent UN pollution report found that air in 44 UK cities and towns is too dangerous to breathe and estimated over 40,000 premature deaths per year from road polluted air. Imperial and Videalert demonstrate that the move towards managing air quality needn’t be a giant leap into the unknown and can be achieved by simply utilising proven technologies in a way that will make a very real difference to the quality of life in our cities and towns.

“The Future of Incentivised Mobility – How to Incentivise Smart City Initiatives through Tokenised Reward Structures” – Many cities are feeling the infrastructural strains that have been associated with growing populations and civilizations throughout history. “The Intelligent Commuter Transport Network” – Faxi generates smart, location aware, intelligent transport networks by harnessing the power of commuters. Every large organisation has a massive, free, available transport network, which can be made visible through the collection and sharing of smart phone data. Most organisations are missing the opportunity to collect this data, which, when analysed, debunks the myth of carpooling as an inflexible commuting method. Analysis reveals that 96% of co-workers are being passed by, or are passing, tens, and sometimes hundreds, of co-workers. By connecting co-workers and providing route information in a visible manner Faxi allows passengers and drivers to organise transport that suits their needs flexibly and reliably and, in the future, will even allow for on-demand travel. The real beauty of these intelligent networks, as this presentation will demonstrate, comes from the fact that you know ahead of time exactly where and when your passengers need to travel – unlike any other transport platform. By collecting and analysing commuter data in a private community you will be able to present the right vehicle at the right time to pick up groups of people that you know arrive at the same destination at the same time.

“Digital Currency, Gamification and Ecological Momentary Assessment – Results from Real World Digital Behaviour Change Interventions for Active and Sustainable Travel” – This presentation will consider the evolution of behaviour change programmes that encourage active and sustainable travel, from web based, retrospective self-report to smartphone based tracking and real time evaluation. Results and lessons from a two-year large-scale intervention in Bologna, Italy and The Travel West Challenge will be shared, with particular discussion around the optimal use of incentives and gamification. How we can use the data from such programmes not only to target future behaviour change interventions but also to inform city planning, will also be reviewed.
