Solent Transport

Profile

Solent Transport is changing the way the public travels in the Solent area; making it greener, healthier and economically stronger than it’s ever been before.

Through the delivery of transport solutions, Solent Transport provides leadership, strategy and direction to support sustainable economic growth in the Solent area. Originally established in 2007, Solent Transport is an apolitical partnership between the councils of the Isle of Wight, Hampshire County, Portsmouth and Southampton.

In collaboration with the local community, business, government and transport operators, Solent Transport undertakes research; develops transport policy and strategy; submits and supports funding bids; and lobbies for transport improvements that will benefit everyone.

Solent Transport also works with the Partnership for Urban South Hampshire (PUSH) to deliver the transport objectives of PUSH’s plans to promote economic regeneration in the sub-region.

Solent Transport has developed two public-facing services, each with their own distinctive brand, which aim to improve travel around the Solent area.

Solent Future Transport Zone

Future Transport Zones are a trial programme funded by the Department for Transport (DfT) to help make journeys easier, smarter and greener.

The Solent Future Transport Zone will provide real-world testing for experts, allowing them to work with a range of local organisations such as councils, hospitals, airports and universities to test and trial innovative ways to transport people and goods. The FTZ will work alongside other local authority led schemes.

The Solent Future Transport Zone has been awarded £28.8m from the DfT to run numerous tests and trials of innovative approaches to transport across the Solent region. As these tests and trials take place, we’ll conduct research, capture data and invite feedback to understand whether these innovations are improving your transport options and the way you travel.

Projects

In addition to working with partners to plan and coordinate investment in cross-boundary transport infrastructure, Solent Transport secured funding for a number of transport projects and programmes across the Solent area which are now complete, and has regularly supported partner organisations in the submission of funding bids for transport projects.

Funding Bids

Solent Transport supports the four member authorities in the submission of funding bids through provision of expert knowledge and advice, and through use of tools such as the SRTM model to provide supporting evidence. Sometimes bids for funding are led by or submitted directly by Solent Transport.

Solent Sub-Regional Transport Model (SRTM)

The SRTM is a multi-modal transport model, covering highway and public transport modes, which allows testing of the impacts and benefits of land use and transport interventions. It also has capabilities to test the economic impacts of these interventions.

Introduction to the SRTM Model

The Solent SRTM is fully WebTAG-compliant and is capable of providing outputs which can robustly support the development of transport strategies and schemes, provide information to support development of funding bids and business cases, and can inform land use strategies and development transport assessments.

SRTM is operated by SYSTRA consultancy under contract to Solent Transport. Since its development in 2010, SRTM has been a key resource supporting securing several hundred million pounds of transport funding in the Solent and planning its delivery. SRTM has also informed numerous Local Plans, major development transport assessments and transport strategies and studies. The model was extensively updated in 2015 and can be used for modelling of transport and land use scenarios for years through to 2041.
