We’re excited to introduce our keynote speakers and their presentations for TRANSPORT Smart Class, North of England 2024, which takes place at The Stoller Hall, Manchester, on Thursday 6th June:

“Taking a Different Approach to Strategic Transport Planning” – Transport for the North (TfN) has recently prepared its second Strategic Transport Plan – which is the North’s pan-regional transport strategy.

In this keynote, Katie Day, Director of Strategy, Analysis and Communications, will explain how working together with the North’s political leaders, business representatives and other partners has enabled TfN to develop this new plan, setting out the economic, social and environmental ambitions for the North to achieve transformational change through better connectivity. It is a plan focused on outcomes for people and places, is based on evidence, and will set the framework for TfN, as a sub-national transport body, to provide advice to government.

“Developing and Delivering Greater Manchester’s Active Travel Programme – Combining Infrastructure, Services, Innovation, Community and Behavioural Change to Support the Bee Network Vision” – “Active Travel is at the heart of everything we do to support Greater Manchester’s Bee Network vision. Set out in our local strategies and transport plans, the Bee Network will bring together walking, wheeling, cycling and all public transport modes into a single joined-up transport offer”…

The Bee Active Network, at 2734km, is the most ambitious active travel infrastructure programme in the UKSince 2020, great progress has been made on delivering this generational change in how communities and visitors move in and around Greater Manchester.

Dr Richard Nickson, Network Director Active Travel, will outline in this keynote presentation how Transport for Greater Manchester are combining best-in-UK-class infrastructure delivery with other interventions, spanning policy, activation, services, community empowerment and behaviour change, in a systems-led approach to achieve significant modal change.

Richard will also talk about how TfGM’s ‘movement for movement’ underpins their approach to healthy active lives.

“Finding the Catalyst for Change in a Car First Borough” – In this keynote, Rose McArthur will outline West Cheshire and Chester Council’s strategic transport vision and ongoing development of a new Local Transport Plan, and ask how stakeholders in the room might assist in overcoming the associated challenges:

“I’m the Director of Strategic Transport, Highways and Climate Change in a non-devolved unitary with a beautiful mix of rural and urban settings. The historic city of Chester, the market towns of Northwich and Winsford, as well as the epic giant of industrial business – Ellesmere Port.

We’ve grand ambition to decarbonise industry, connect people to jobs and skills, education and each other and we have exceptional people working really hard to develop thriving places. We just have this little problem of 2 year transport funding settlements, deregulated buses, limited active travel networks and being one of the easiest accessible boroughs by car with bountiful car parking and an unhealthy obsession with potholes. I want to bring a bit of The Olympics Travel Demand Management thinking to this beautiful borough but I don’t have the data or the catalyst for change. Maybe you can help me with that?”

Last year’s edition in Leeds featured keynotes from (above) TfGM’s Transport Strategy Director (now Executive Director for Transport at the West Yorkshire Combined Authority), Simon Warburton, (below) TfN’s Head of Connected Mobility, Matt Smallwood, and on behalf of WYCA (bottom pic), Interim Head of Transport Policy, Rachel Jones, and Head of Future Mobility, Kate Gifford.
