For 90 years Living Streets has been a beacon for walking. In the early days, their campaigning led to the UK’s first zebra crossing and the introduction of speed limits. Today, Living Streets are helping address new challenges such as reclaiming our pavements, securing safer routes to schools, tackling air pollution, transforming streets with parklets and designing cities around people, not vehicles.

At TRANSPORT Smart Class, South West England 2019, Kelly Theis demonstrated how digital technology is enabling Living Streets to deliver one of the biggest behaviour change programmes in the UK. Working with local authority and transport partners, WOW – the award-winning interactive Travel Tracker and year round walk to school challenge – is making an impact in thousands of schools the length and breadth of the country: getting 23% more children walking some or all of the way to school, after five weeks, and resulting in 30% fewer all-the-way car journeys.
