Research conducted by George Washington University reveals that traffic pollution accounts for three in ten child asthma cases in the UK and that the UK ranks 24th out of 194 countries studied with the highest proportion of new childhood cases attributable to traffic pollution. At TRANSPORT Smart Class, South West England 2019, Imperial’s Ashley Bijster and Videalert’s Dave Wearmouth presented case studies of Bath & North East Somerset Council and Southampton to help demonstrate how the move towards managing air quality needn’t be a giant step into the unknown but can be achieved by utilising proven technologies in a way that that will make a very real difference to the quality of life in UK cities and towns (44 of which were found by a recent UN pollution report to have air too dangerous to breathe!).
