The Ulster Transport Museum tells the story of transport and social change in this part of the world since the birth of the modern era. It is a place of inspiration for the designers, engineers and adventurers of the future who will take on the challenges of inventing cleaner and greener ways to travel. The Museum of Innovation is a permanent exhibition at UTM focused on local innovators whose creations have had a global impact:
“This exhibition gives us an opportunity to showcase an impressive and significant aspect of this small country’s history”, says Clare Ablett, the Curator of Transport and Industry at the Ulster Transport Museum. “The positive impact our local scientists and engineers have had around the world is nothing short of astonishing. Whether it was saving the lives of pilots, revolutionising agricultural technology, pushing the boundaries of aircraft design, inventing a new form of road travel or saving the lives of those who suffer cardiac arrest, they all have had an impact on people around the world and Northern Ireland was the birthplace of those achievements”.
At TRANSPORT Smart Class, Northern Ireland 2023, Clare told us more about some of these ground-breaking innovators (from John Dunlop, Professor Frank Pantridge, John DeLorean and James Martin, to the Short Brothers, Harry Ferguson and Lilian Bland), the stories behind the objects on display and their relevance to engineers and scientists today and in the future.
