We’re delighted to confirm our TRANSPORT Smart Class, North of England 2021 keynote speakers, along with their presentation topics:

  • “Embracing Innovation to Enable Greater Manchester to Build Back Better” – In this opening keynote, Nicola Kane – TfGM’s Head of Strategic Planning, Insight and Innovation – will discuss the different ways in which Greater Manchester is innovating to deliver the vision set out in its Greater Manchester Transport Strategy for 2040 and to enable the conurbation to recover from the COVID19 pandemic whilst tackling inequalities and transport emissions. Nicola’s presentation will cover all aspects of GM’s innovation agenda, from mobility hubs, shared micromobility and EVs, and CAVs; through to using AI and 5G technology to support social distancing and better manage our transport system.
  • “Future Travel Scenarios in the North and the Developing Transport Landscape” – Transport for the North are using a scenarios approach to understand and respond to the future uncertainty of how people will interact with the transport system in the years ahead. This will inform the future of transport debate, and help TfN to design transport strategies which are adaptive and resilient to a range of different plausible futures. TfN’s Senior Major Roads Planning and Strategy Officer, Simon McGlone, will demonstrate in this keynote how Future Travel Scenarios (including “Just About Managing”, “Prioritised Places”, “Digitally Distributed” and “Urban Zero Carbon” scenarios) have developed a shared understanding of the current and emerging complexity of the future of transport and created dynamic roadmaps which TfN will need to navigate when delivering their vision of a thriving North, where world class transport supports sustainable economic growth, excellent quality of life and improved opportunities for all, in line with the Northern Charter objectives.
  • “Highways England’s Digital Roads Vision” – It has long been said that digital technologies have the power to disrupt the highways industry. But to actually realise the benefits new technology can bring, we need a coherent plan. In this keynote presentation, Head of Innovation, Dr Annette Pass, will explain how Highways England intends to deliver its Digital Roads vision through three themes: Digital Design & Construction, Digital Operations and Digital for Customers. Annette will also discuss the role innovation plays in successfully delivering change.

TRANSPORT Smart Class, North of England 2021 takes place in-person on Friday September 10th (8.30am-2.00pm) at Chetham’s School of Music, Manchester.

TRANSPORT Smart Classes show key buyer side stakeholders how they can deploy the latest digital technology-enabled solutions, data-driven strategies and best practices to tackle their transport sector challenges (e.g. around congestion, traffic flows, air pollution and emissions, noise, first and last mile mobility, customer experience, cost effectiveness, connecting transport networks, managing and maintaining assets & infrastructure) and deliver a transport system that will allow passengers to travel efficiently, safely and with minimal impact on the environment. Core themes range from on-demand transport and MaaS applications, EVs and e-mobility, micromobility, predictive traffic management, journey time monitoring, smart parking and enforcing CAZs and LEZs, to active travel and behavioural change, analysing people movements, new ways of visualising data, connected and autonomous vehicles, intelligent street lighting, real-time transport modelling, smart ticketing and fare collection, and ITS in a Covid and post-Covid world.
