We’re delighted to confirm that Shane Hymers, Transport for London’s Principal Bus Policy Planner, has agreed to join us at TRANSPORT Smart Class, London & South East England 2018 (October 31st) to deliver a keynote presentation entitled “Dynamic Demand Led bus service planning: maximising the opportunities provided by technology”.

“We live in an era”, observes Shane, “where technology is moving significantly faster than legislation and that in the transport sector, we as innovators and policy makers have the opportunity to shape the future of transport and its regulations”. Shane will be sharing the thoughts of TfL on the modelling for demand led dynamic service planning and aims to get likeminded professionals thinking about the opportunities emerging technologies can provide to improve the public transport experience. Whilst most are familiar with the concept of ‘Demand Responsive Buses’, Shane will explore what this could mean for buses in London. “There are lots of global for profit organisations that see opportunity in this area in London, particularly in the multi-occupancy space between taxi and bus. Will we see Technology and Database experts teaming with traditional transport companies to provide services? If so, what does this mean for Transport Authorities and operations such as London Buses?”

In addition to looking at future technologies, Shane is also involved in the delivery of London’s new Mayor’s Transport Strategy as well as TfL’s transition to Smart bus passenger surveying. Shane has spent his entire professional career in public transport, starting out in operations with Stagecoach UK Bus. Shane previously held the role of Policy and Strategy Manager for Public Transport at Kent County Council and oversaw the delivery of many transport initiatives, including Kent’s inclusion in the multi-operator ‘Discovery’ bus ticket and the restoration of ‘Fastrack’, Kent’s premium Bus Rapid Transit network.
