Highways England’s Head of Intelligent Transport Systems, Dr Joanna White, joined us in Birmingham earlier this week to deliver a truly insightful opening keynote at TRANSPORT Smart Class, Midlands 2019. Jo initially outlined future Highways England ambitions, including the 9 key future trends highlighted in their “Connecting the Country” report that the organisation will be focussing on to meet the challenges currently faced on the strategic road network. She then talked to us about ongoing connected and autonomous vehicle trials, the role of Highways England in those trials and the value of collaboration across road authorities, vehicle manufacturers, telecoms providers and academia. Jo also discussed how the outcomes of those trials will deliver services and determine future intelligent infrastructure requirements for digital roads as well as how these can support intelligence led end to end journey planning.
