Globally, 30% of all food produced goes to waste, resulting in $940 billion per year in economic losses and 8% of green house gas emissions. SDG 12.3 calls for halving per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reducing food losses along production and supply chains by 2030. FoodCloud is a social enterprise using digital technology to connect businesses with surplus food to charities that need food. To date, FoodCloud has supported the redistribution of over 50 million meals in the UK and Ireland, equating to nearly 73,000 tonnes in carbon savings. At WASTE MANAGEMENT Smart Class 2019, Chief Operating Officer, Emma Walsh, revealed how FoodCloud’s processes and technology allow very short dated and small quantities of food to be redistributed effectively in local communities.
